Vicky Ann Nelson, “Makoons” meaning Bear Cub, 66, longtime resident of
Balkan, MN and proud member of the Turtle Clan with the Leech Lake Band of
Ojibwe, journeyed to the Spirit World on Friday, January 17, 2025. She was born
on January 15, 1959, to Charles and Marie (Lincoln) Cockman in Grand Rapids,
MN.Vicky graduated from Greenway High School and still holds track records
there. She married Terry Lee Nelson on June 5, 1982. She worked at US Steel
MinnTac, as a bartender and as a caregiver over the years. Her favorite pastimes
were bird watching, sci-fi and horror movies and “putzing” with things. She will
always be remembered by her family as a great cook making the best mashed
potatoes, spaghetti and wild rice dishes.
Vicky is survived by her children: Jessica Nelson-Rademacher, Sauk Rapids, Jamie
Lynn Nelson, Hibbing, and Alex Nelson, Chisholm; special niece: Bobbi Busick,
Grand Rapids; siblings: Bonnie Rautio, Grand Rapids, and Paul (June) Cockman,
Bovey; grandchildren: Jeremy, Austin, Anastasia, Mikala, Alexis, Eliason, Maya,
Tyler and Trevor; mother-in-law, Barbara Nelson, Hibbing; four great-
grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Terry, her parents: Charles and Marie,
brother: Robert Cockman, sister: Carol Stockwell and niece: Billie Harrington.
A Celebration of Life for Vicky will be held on Friday, January 24 from Noon to 4
pm at the Lone Eagle Ball Club Community Center located at 30975 Arctic Road
in Deer River, MN. Arrangements are with Peterson Funeral Chapel of Coleraine,
MN
