Trudie Burton Obituary

Trudie Mae (Gustafson) Burton, age 76, passed away gently and unexpectedly at Bigfork Valley Hospital in the early morning hours of January 7, 2024, on her 47th wedding anniversary.

Trudie was born to Julie (Allenby) and Albert “Bud” Gustafson in Grand Rapids on August 11, 1947.  She grew up on Pughole Lake in rural Grand Rapids and graduated from Grand Rapids Senior High in 1965.  Following graduation, she worked as a clerk at JCPenney in Grand Rapids until 1975, when she was hired at Blandin Paper Company.  She met and fell in love with her husband, Alfred Burton, at Blandins; the couple was joyfully married on January 7, 1977, in Sisseton, SD.  They lived in a log home they built on the Prairie River until moving to Coleraine in 1983.  In 2018 they moved to their twin home in Bigfork.  Theirs was truly a marriage made in heaven.  They were inseparable for 47 years, sharing work and play, blessings and trials in their lives.  Throughout their retirement they enjoyed travel, golf, searching for “the good stuff” at  antique stores and garage sales,  wintering in Phoenix and spending time with family and friends.  Trudie was a talented and eclectic artist filled with ideas for new techniques and projects.  She loved the outdoors and had the greenest thumb.  She could make her sewing machine stand up and dance and over the past few winters she and Al completed hand-sewn quilts together.  When they married, Trudie graciously accepted Alfred’s family as her own; she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Trudie will be dearly missed, and her memory will be cherished and honored by her husband, Alfred;  children: Cristy (Tim) Kintop of Brainerd, Ron (Sharon) Burton of Coleraine and Cindy (Jim) Mallum of Cohasset; fourteen treasured grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sisters Diane (Arlan) Jensen of Remer and Rita (Mike) Perrault of Norway, ME; along with many other family members and friends that she kept in close contact with.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Julie Gustafson; brother, Dennis; infant grandson, Alex; and in-laws, Harold and Christine Burton.

Visitation will be 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM memorial service on Thursday, January 11, 2024, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cohasset, with Reverend David Peske officiating.  The service will be followed by inurnment in the church columbarium and a reception hosted by Trudie’s family.
