Melvin "Bud" Richardson Obituary

Honoring Melvin “Bud” Richardson with Military Burial

In February, we gathered to celebrate Bud’s remarkable life, sharing stories, laughter, and the memories that made him unforgettable. Now, on Friday, June 13th at 11:00 AM at Lakeview Cemetery, we come together again to honor his military service with the 25th infantry and lay him to rest with the honors he earned.

From the playful teasing that defined his marriage to Karen, to the warmth and joy of his Brady Bunch household, Bud was never just a presence; he was an experience. Bud’s legacy is one of unwavering loyalty to his family, his friends, his country, and even to his Packers and Yankees (we tried to change his mind, but some things are unshakable). Whether he was casting a fishing line, making friendly wagers, or gathering with "the crew" for morning coffee, Bud had a gift for turning simple moments into cherished memories.

Join us as we celebrate a life well lived and a man well loved. Following the service, a lunch gathering will be held at the Smiths’ where we can continue honoring Bud through laughter, stories, and of course, a friendly game of poker.

Melvin "Bud" Richardson Obituary

Melvin “Bud” Floyd Richardson, 84, passed away at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center on February 4, 2025.

Bud was born April 4, 1940, to Floyd and Grace (Bushinger) Richardson in Rail Prairie, MN. He attended Greenway schools where he showcased his athletic abilities playing football. Bud gained a reputation for his impressive arm-wrestling skills which proved handy when he was hired as the first bouncer at Dale’s Bar in Coleraine. He was a proud Army veteran who demonstrated unwavering bravery while serving in the 25th infantry. Bud’s sense of duty and patriotism led him to support military causes, fostering friendships and community among veterans and service members.

Bud married the love of his life Karen (Krause) Richardson on May 22, 1982, in Bovey, MN. Together in life and now in eternity, Bud and Karen share a bond filled with deep love and playful banter, always finding joy in teasing each other with a smile and a laugh. This joyful bantering was ingrained in their blended family, which they referred to as the “Brady Bunch”. Their home was a place where everyone felt welcome, even with Bud’s playful spirit shining through as he often joked that he should start charging rent.

Bud found joy in the great outdoors, enjoying activities like walking the dog, boating, fishing, and hunting. He found great pleasure in golfing, where he spent countless hours enjoying the beauty of the various courses. Bud enjoyed gambling, whether it was placing friendly sports wagers on his favorite teams, the Packers and the Yankees, or spending an evening at the casino. Playing poker with his family was also a cherished tradition, filled with laughter and unforgettable memories.

One of Bud's most treasured routines was his morning coffee with "the crew." This daily gathering was more than just a coffee break; it was a time for sharing stories, discussing the day's events, and enjoying the company of dear friends. These moments were a testament to the strong bonds and lasting friendships he built over the years. Bud will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Bud is now reunited with his wife, parents, and brother Ervin Richardson as well as his beloved dogs Benji “the King Jr.”, Blue, Cuddles, and Oscar.

Bud’s legacy will live on through the lives of his six children Vicki (Darrin) Johnson, Jason Richardson, Jill (Harry) Aultman, Jay Parkinen, Julie Wilson, and Jeff (Kelly) Parkinen; honorary son Doug Cogswell; brothers Jordan (Bernie) Richardson and Bill Richardson; sister Charlotte (Darrell) Zuehlke; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and many other cherished relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Bovey City Hall on Saturday, February 15th starting at 3:00pm. Food and beverages will be served while we honor Bud and share memories into the evening. Upon warmer weather, details for a burial with military honors at Lakeview Cemetery will be shared.
