Margaret Ruth “Maggie” Glorvigen, 98, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2023, with her dedicated and loving children by her side.
Her journey began on September 16, 1924, born at home to parents Jesse and Oscar Johnson of Bovey. After her mother passed away when she was only 7, her sisters, Dad, Aunt and Grandmother were the people she cherished. Maggie graduated in 1943 from Greenway High School and worked at local businesses (after being a “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII). She married George Glorvigen in 1946, moved to Minneapolis for four years, worked supporting George who completed his degree at the U of M and returned to the Grand Rapids area – a beautiful new beginning to raise a family. Six children, more dogs and pets than you dare to count, keeping every day in check and giving encouragement and support filled her days! Maggie was the heart of the family…the mantra – “Do the best you can” was always given to keep you inspired and by the way – “Don’t be late for supper”!!
Maggie’s social groups included the Women’s Club, Eastern star, Red Cross Gray Ladies (volunteer), bowling leagues and weekly ceramic creations, as well as extensive family activities. Getting away from the daily routine was always “welcome”. The local economy also appreciated her efforts at “Retail Therapy” – a zest for shopping. She always had a smile and laughter to brighten your day!!!
Maggie’s life journey has been truly astounding. Her generation went from horse and buggy, oil lanterns, life threatening disease and hard labor living off the land to a high tech, jet speed lifestyle with everything at your fingertips. Which challenges were the greatest??? Hauling water from a well 300 yards away from the house daily or learning to use an I-Phone at the age of 89?!
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters – Mayme (Darrell) Randall (2001) and Florence (Gordon) Beer (2012); husband of 47 years – George Glorvigen (1993); daughter-in-law – Nancy (Motter) Glorvigen (2013) and great grand-daughter; McKinley Rose Miskovich (2017 at 17 months).
The Glorvigen legacy includes 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Nancy (Bob) Haver of New Brighton, MN – Lindsay and Allison; Rick (Karen Rantala) Glorvigen of Key Largo, FL -Kristel, Katie, Michael and Eric; Susan (Joe) Miskovich of Bovey, MN – Gabriel, Jessica and Ryan; Gene (Nancy Motter) Glorvigen (Kristi Pesch) of Rochester, MN – Emily and Erin; Martin (Laura Budrow) Glorvigen of Bovey, MN; Scott (Tina Gareri) Glorvigen of Grand Rapids, MN – Lauren and Adam. So many beautiful memories with family. We are so blessed for our Mom/Grandmother to be on earth with us for such a wonderful and amazing lifetime! May the next chapter of your “journey” be full of newfound joy and happiness.
Fulfilling Mom’s wishes:
A “Celebration of Life” and her interment will be held on Mother’s Day 2024.
