Jon “Billy” William Mackey, age 83, died on Sunday, November 30, at his home.
Billy was born in Grand Rapids and was the middle child of Chester and Mae Mackey. He graduated from Greenway High School in 1960. He worked for a few years at Pillsbury Flour Mill in Minneapolis before returning to Calumet to work for Century Motor Freight as a truck driver. He retired in 1998 after 32 years. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Calumet Fire Department, retiring after 20 years. In his retirement years, he started many hobbies, from wild ricing, picking balsam boughs, collecting sports cards, supporting his favorite politicians and spending time during the winter in Las Vegas. He was an avid sports fan. He always taped the Vikings games, admitting he couldn’t bear to watch if they lost.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Jerry Mackey, Tim Mackey and Wendy Shevich.
