Richard J. Frings, 87, longtime Bovey resident, died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 in the Margaret Z. Dozier Hospice House in Tallahassee, FL after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 16, 1932 in Richmond, MN, he was the son of John P. and Helen (Vogt) Frings. Richard was a Greenway High School graduate and had worked as a Rural Mail Carrier for the U. S. Postal Service serving in Bovey from 1950 to 1987. Richard and Carolyn Prue were married in Grand Rapids and had been residents of Bovey, Grand Rapids, and Mims, FL. He was a U.S Army Veteran of the Korean War, had been a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church of Coleraine and longtime usher and member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Titusville, FL, a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion in both Coleraine and Mims, FL, had been on the Bovey Fire Department and served as its Chief, had been on the Bovey City Council and served as the Mayor of Bovey, and had been an Arbo Township Supervisor. Always hopeful and optimistic, Richard was also a 16-time cancer survivor.
Richard was blessed with the gift of gab and eagerly conversed with family, friends, neighbors, politicians, church and community members, and people along his postal route. He enjoyed woodworking, puttering and fixing anything, dining out, travelling to all 50 states, going on cruises, cars, Jeopardy, barbequing ribs, gardening and watching old western movies. His greatest joy was recalling the time spent with his grandchildren, teaching them how to fish and to hunt and how to give a proper firm handshake.
His parents, John and Helen Frings and brother Marcellus J Frings preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn P. Frings; his children, Tamara (Mike) DelSonno of Farmington, MN, David (Jody) Frings of Lake Nebagamon, WI, Richard C. Frings of Vernal, UT and Thomas (Paula) Frings of Carrabelle, FL; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Funeral Mass on Thursday, November 7, 2019 in the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Coleraine. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine.
